I really, really do not like the new FOB video.
Why? (Things to keep in mind: I am writing from the pov of a white person)
For starters, they're trying to pass themselves off as some great humanitarians when all they did was go over there, pose for a few photo ops, and film a video. It seems to me like they just wanted to fulfil some community service obligation in their contract, not that they genuinely give a fuck. I mean, I'm sure they DO, but think of it from this way - if you saw a bunch of rich, mostly white celebrities go over to Africa, make a video about it, and pimp it out what would you think? Caring or publicity?
Secondly - was it really necessary to have the "EVERYONE LIKES US, EVENAFRICAN PEOPLE (Cause there's obvs no black people in America - look at our previous videos for proof)" scene?! Well, two - first a bunch of people in the middle of a fucking WAR ZONE watching the Dance, Dance video and totes loving it, despite most of them not having any idea what's going on (for those who don't know: it's an American Homecoming dance. They barely make sense to anyone out of America!). Then the ever popular in modern media scene, the "small African children running towards us lovingly". Yup. Thanks. We get it. Even people who haven't heard of you love you.
Thirdly, I can pretty much assure you that the people involved in this video were paid close to nothing, if at all. So, they claim to be against the exploitation of citizens of third world countries, yet they go over there and film a video for cheap labour costs and put NOTHING back into the country where they filmed? Yeah, awesome. I also consider it inappropriate that v2 of this video is going to be the band exploiting the struggles of other people to look good.
There's also the issue of the video telling us nothing - there's child soldiers. But WHY? There's "child soldiers" in other countries - conscription at 17. Why is this worse? Why do they need so many soldiers that children are needed? What are the causes? What happened? What's been done? We can't help if we don't know! Lastly - just wait for all the idiot girls who get their opinions off Pete's blog to be "OMG SAVE DARFUR!!! BAD STUFF HAPPENING DON'T KNOW WHAT BUT PETE SAID IT SUCKED". It cheapens the cause to have uninformed people saying how bad it is - people are so used to hearing that it's bad from people who don't know Bush from badly trimmed pubic hair that they tune out. I mean, if they can't say why it's bad...it mustn't be too bad, right?
I can see them getting a lot of bad feedback for this. It jus makes me SO uncomfortable - how would Joe feel if someone did a video about the Holocaust (I'm not comparing the two - one is the Holocaust, the other is the Darfur situation) with the song being a pop song containing the lyrics 'we're the new face of failure/prettier and younger/but not any better off'? Knowing that the people who the video was for were going to be making a shittonne ofmoney? This entire video honestly makes me twitch. "Failure" is a word people use when they want an excuse to pretty much colonize African countries. Failure is a term that makes me wonder wtf they were thinking with this song choice
...And once again, so many people are acting like it's the best video ever and it's going to actually make a difference, and that Wentz should get blowjobs and cookies for it. Sarah McLachlan's World on Fire video was about 10x more effective at sending a message, imo.
OH YAY. Apparently they're doing a v2 which is an even bigger "OHMAHGOD WE'VE BEEN TO AFRICA WITH TEH STARVING CHILDRUNZ BUY OUR CD"
Oh, and Pete? The last thing anyone needs is America "helping" them.

Nintendo DS Lite (white) with two stylesus (styli?), a charger, and Nintendogs. I paid $200, I'll sell it for $160-$170/best offer that isn't too lame. It's barely been used, and one of you has to have a brother/sister/cousin/nephew that wants one
Atreyu - Fractures in the Facade or something or other EP. $10
HIM - The Singles box set (missing Gone With The Sin, but I do have the songs), The Sacrament single, and..some other one. Best offer
I can get pictures of any of it, and the DS still has all the original packaging, I think.

| TAI.../Cobra! |
[05 Aug 2007|11:18pm] |
|
-Left Steph's house at 9am, caught the 9:30 train, ended up at Richmond at 11am.
- On the walk to the Corner Steph: It'll be pretty empty, right? It looks it from here Me: You watch, we'll get there and the line will be up the alley.
- I was correct. I stress and go "OMGWTF BACK OF LINE?!". I look around aimlessly and possibly making the look of fearful doom I'm fond of making
- notyourfriend saves us from sitting up near the back carpark. We TOTALLY don't cut in line.
- I reveal how much food I had (I think it was a bag milky ways, a bag of snickers, a big of flakes, a box of cookies, twisters, lollipops...). People look at me funny. So I hand it out.
- blo0barry and sitoutdances come. We talk about things including JOE AND CHARLIE IN MATCHING THONGS, FOB gay sex (which is where Krissy rocked up. BAD TIMING, BB), Thrusterday, etc.
- We pretty much feed the line.
- We see EBODAKASG bitching about wanting early entry. I think she was refused entry on the grounds of her being an old cow.
- OOOH DOORS OPEN! They try to confiscate Krissy's camera, claiming it was a professional camera. She informed them that it just had a lens cap on it, and we're safe.
- OOOOOH GOING IN! Steph, Krissy and I end up on the side, next to the barricade. A pretty good view of the stage, which is pretty much made of yay.
- City Riots come on. They sounded pretty good from where I was, but mixing seemed a bit off? Or it could've been that I was right next to the speakers.
- OHMYGOD, IT'S COBRA STARSHIP. Can I just say that Vicky is the prettiest girl on FBR? Actually, the only girl. I dinnae count Hayley from Paramore as female.
- They play, um, pretty much the entire album. During Diamond Girl, I do the "SENORITA NACHOS BURRITO FAJITA SI CASA?" thing. Just for imjustlikeme :D. I'm not sure if he heard, but Krissy (or was it Steph? One of you two) did and nearly peed herself laughing. At one point during the set, Vicky's microphone wasn't working, so Gabe did an impersonation of her - "HI I'M VICTORIA. MY MICROPHONE ISN'T WORKING!". There was also Gabe/Ryland buttbumping, and a microphone stand being, uh, "moved" during SOAP (when Mr Beckett joined them). I ALSO SWEAR THAT GABE'S FLY WAS UNDONE AT ONE POINT
- OHMYGOD SECURITY DUDE WHO ASSAULTED ME MOVES! Dude was evil.
- EEE THE ACADEMY IS... TIME!
- Okay, I was mostly there for Cobra, but I did like TAI.... Now? I love TAI... - their show was so damn good. Also, they didn't play Down & Out so I didn't die a horrible twitchy death. William is CRAZY onstage. And absolutely tiny. Both bands seemed to love being onstage.
- However, by TAI's last few songs, I was feeling really sick, so I ran outside and waited at the back entrance.
- In the 3 minutes I leave backstage to go grab everyone else, everyone else gets there. Typical. Then half the guys (and a girl) leave - apparently they were sick?
- We try and feed Chislett. He turns down out mintslices 'cause he'd just ate chewy, but takes a photo with Patribear...and laughs at me.
- I get crushed, wait 45 minutes, try not to kill the girl who told William to look into using proactive and William turns to me and goes "Hi...aww are you alright?". I ask him if I can get a photo of him and Patribear, he makes this adorable "bwuhomgwtfconfused?" face and does it. I say thanks and tell him how amazing the show was, and he's like "thank you! *smile*".
- Then I go find Gabe. When Steph and I finally get near him, we tell him that we ordered pizza in his name, and he's like "*sadface* I really wanted pizza last night...any left?". We say no, we left it at home. He looks sad. We then talk about his phone and how he went over his Telstra minutes - I go "I'm unlimited" and he's all "not fair". I ask him for a photo with Patribear and he laughs, and poses with him. He also poses with Steph. We say bye and I develop a massive fangirl crush on him. Dude is really quite good looking in person. Like, legit nicest guy ever, he's lovely.
- We consider dinner. However, bytime we get up to where notyourfriend and her friends were, we figure that Steph and I would be in danger of missing the last Geelong train, so blo0barry, Steph, and myself brave the darkening streets of Melbourne to get Maccas. We end up getting Hungry Jacks and then manage to get lost trying to find Spencer St (as in..we looked around Flinders St, caught a tram, went past our stop, had to run to Spencer and find the Geelong train. Annette has an emergency involving finding a friend's number, BUT MY SK COMES THROUGH.
- Trainride, from Spenshhhhhhhhha to Geelong...no unfortuanate events.
ALL IN ALL? AMAZING. DEFINITELY SEE THESE BANDS IF YOU GET THE CHANCE.
